Take Vitamin B12 supplements to prevent deficiency!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"dd0j1-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"dd0j1-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dd0j1-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">I joined the\u00a0<em>Vegans in India<\/em> Facebook\u00a0group earlier today\u00a0and was\u00a0disturbed by various comments that I saw on a recent thread, about people following a vegan diet and yet not supplementing it with Vitamin B12. \u00a0Those who advocate that B12 supplementation is not necessary are being reckless with their own health and irresponsible by misleading others. \u00a0(Politeness and political correctness be damned! \u00a0Lives are at stake here.) \u00a0Please, folks, ignore B12 supplements at your peril. \u00a0Take it from me, as I was reckless with mine and suffered the consequences.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"dd0j1-0-0\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"dd0j1-0-0\">Here&#8217;s my story and why you may want to supplement your vegan diet with Vitamin B12:<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"dd0j1-0-0\">\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"a050h-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"a050h-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"a050h-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jodi365.com\/singledout\/vignettes-vegan-vacation-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">grew up lacto-vegetarian in India and turned vegan at the age of 21<\/a>, during grad school in the US. \u00a0I was healthy and athletic. \u00a0While at home, I would cook my own meals. \u00a0I was aware of the need to supplement my diet with reliable, external sources of B12, since B12 is not present in significant quantities in foods of plant origin. \u00a0Yet, I kept putting the supplementation plan off. \u00a0Blame it on\u00a0a false sense of security \u2013\u00a0I had read\u00a0that an adult&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merckmanuals.com\/home\/disorders-of-nutrition\/vitamins\/vitamin-b-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">B12 reserves<\/a> typically last three years if not replenished\u00a0\u2013 coupled with\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"a050h-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">the stress of grad school (&#8220;no time to worry about this now&#8221;), the foolish notion that I would be &#8220;cheating&#8221; if I practiced a vegan diet and yet consumed non-vegan supplements, and ignorance\u2014not knowing that vegan B12 supplements did exist. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"12hgi-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"12hgi-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"12hgi-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"6c3c9-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6c3c9-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6c3c9-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">About a year-and-a-half after I turned vegan, I began adding vegan, B12-fortified nutritional yeast to the breads that I would bake. \u00a0(I was no MasterChef; I would simply toss all the ingredients into a bread machine and wake up to the aroma of freshly baked bread!) \u00a0However, sadly, that was too little and too late. \u00a0My body&#8217;s B12 reserves had run out and I began showing symptoms of megaloblastic anemia. \u00a0I also had trouble taking notes in class \u2013 my beautiful penmanship had become reduced to weak scribbles (&#8220;dysgraphia&#8221;). \u00a0The primary-care physician whom I finally consulted called me back immediately after my blood test&#8217;s results were ready: I had become\u00a0deficient in B12. If a normal count was above <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/ency\/article\/003705.htm\" target=\"_blank\">200\u00a0pg\/mL<\/a>, mine was critically low at 133 pg\/mL.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"bnul-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"bnul-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"bnul-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"c5qlk-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"c5qlk-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"c5qlk-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">To guard against the possibility that my body was, for whatever reason, getting enough B12 but unable to absorb\u00a0it \u2013 as when an essential lining in the stomach is missing or damaged \u2013\u00a0I was put on a regimen of monthly mega-doses of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merckmanuals.com\/home\/blood-disorders\/anemia\/vitamin-deficiency-anemia\" target=\"_blank\">B12 injections<\/a>. \u00a0It took me MONTHS to get out of that listless, vegetable-like state, and I wouldn&#8217;t wish it upon fellow vegans.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"f239g-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"f239g-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"f239g-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"621l7-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"621l7-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"621l7-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">So, please, don&#8217;t be ignorant. \u00a0There&#8217;s no excuse for ignorance\u00a0in this information age.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"9obma-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9obma-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9obma-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"c67cc-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"c67cc-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"c67cc-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Don&#8217;t be pig-headed and put off supplements, either. \u00a0Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause irreparable damage to the nervous system. \u00a0(My handwriting remains impaired to this day.)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"5j3qu-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"5j3qu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5j3qu-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" data-offset-key=\"cnqgq-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"cnqgq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cnqgq-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">I was, to the extent of becoming deficient in Calcium and Vitamin D also. \u00a0If you have been vegan for even some months, please do yourself a favor: Go to a reputable hospital or clinic in your city or town and get your Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, and Calcium levels checked. \u00a0A blood test for all three will cost you only about \u20b92,000 and potentially save you much time and money down the road. \u00a0The picture below shows that vitamins that I take regularly as I continue on my vegan diet.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"cnqgq-0-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"92bi4\" class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9o4e-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9o4e-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">If you are taking Vitamin D supplements, be sure that it is D3 (cholecalciferol), rather than D2 (ergocalciferol). \u00a0D2 is poorly absorbed by the body. \u00a0A common source of D3 is lanolin (the oil in sheep&#8217;s wool), but vegan D3 supplements are available these days.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9o4e-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9o4e-0-0\">Let me end by channeling Steve Jobs:\u00a0Be vegan, but don&#8217;t be foolish.<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9o4e-0-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\"
