Avi\u2019s heart skipped a beat or two when Aarti entered the hall. \u00a0Tall and slender, Aarti was wearing a plain, light-blue Ahimsa\u00a0<\/em>silk sari. \u00a0Her head was partially covered by a long, dark-blue scarf with heavy embroidery. \u00a0The scarf was hanging freely by her side. \u00a0Light makeup on her eyes and cheeks enhanced her beautiful facial features. \u00a0He knew that she was attractive, but he had not imagined her looking this gorgeous. \u00a0Suddenly self-conscious, he took a quick look around the room to see whether anybody caught him eyeing her. \u00a0Still, he couldn\u2019t keep his gaze away from his bride.<\/p>\n

It was the night of Avi and Aarti\u2019s engagement ceremony. The wedding was to take place in another two days.\u00a0 Barely a year ago, Avi had been a carefree bachelor.\u00a0 He was only 26 then and not thinking of getting married anytime soon.\u00a0 Yet, his thoughts on marriage changed quickly when he noticed this simple yet elegant young woman happily participating in the festivities at his cousin\u2019s wedding.\u00a0 He had been aware that weddings are fertile hunting grounds for families looking for prospective brides and grooms and wondered whether he might be set up.\u00a0 Yet, as he learned that a match between him and Aarti was being explored, he didn\u2019t protest.\u00a0 As he came to learn more about Aarti, far from protesting, he couldn\u2019t wait to tie the knot with her!<\/p>\n

They would have been married by now, but for an unfortunate incident that led to the wedding\u2019s being put off indefinitely.\u00a0 It terrified him that Aarti had wanted to call off the wedding altogether.\u00a0 However, he was relieved when things got back on track between them.\u00a0 With Aarti now seated beside him at their engagement, nothing else mattered.<\/p>\n

How he had been looking forward to this day.\u00a0 As he turned towards her, their eyes met.\u00a0 Her skin was glowing and she was smiling, but something was missing.\u00a0 Instantly, he knew that something was bothering her.\u00a0 He wished he could get a few minutes with her in private.\u00a0 He wanted to tell her about the e-mail he had received earlier in the day. He looked around at the thirty or so relatives around them \u2013 some sat passively, while others hovered like watchful eagles.\u00a0 Aarti gamely kept up conversation with them.\u00a0 Occasionally, Avi would come up with diversionary tactics to disperse a few of them, but others would immediately take their place.\u00a0 Try as he might, he just couldn\u2019t get a quiet moment with his sweetheart.<\/p>\n

Before long, Avi\u2019s mother stepped forward with the rings.\u00a0 It was time for the exchange of rings, and all the guests gathered around the couple.\u00a0 Cameras flashed and clicked all over.\u00a0 Everybody was in high spirits and cheered merrily.\u00a0 When prompted, Aarti extended her right hand forward.\u00a0 Avi looked at her beautifully manicured but henna-less hand.\u00a0 He was reminded of their first interaction at his cousin\u2019s wedding.\u00a0 She was jumping with joy and showing off the dark henna on both her palms.\u00a0 When Avi quizzed her about her excitement, she bashfully answered, \u201cThe darker the color of my henna, the deeper will be my husband\u2019s love for me.\u201d\u00a0 She couldn\u2019t have imagined at the time that she was talking to her future husband.<\/p>\n

Avi smiled and gently held her right hand in his hands, before slipping the shiny ring around her long, thin finger.\u00a0 People showered the couple with flowers as Aarti also placed a ring around Avi\u2019s finger.\u00a0 The elders then directed them to feed each other sweets.\u00a0 He saw in it the blessing, \u201cMay you always have sweet words for each other!\u201d\u00a0 With the rings exchanged, people began drifting almost as if on auto-pilot towards the inviting food counters.<\/p>\n

Aarti and Avi were then escorted by their parents to a special stage on the lawns, where they were seated side-by-side on stately chairs.\u00a0 A large table bedecked with flower petals lay in front of them, the white tablecloth matching the groom\u2019s\u00a0sherwani<\/em> and the petals, the bride\u2019s scarf.\u00a0 The young couple finally seemed to have a moment to themselves.<\/p>\n

As they waited for the wedding guests to begin greeting them individually, Avi cautiously slipped his hand under the table and began caressing Aarti\u2019s hand.\u00a0 She smiled nervously, but didn\u2019t see the need any more to pull her hand away.<\/p>\n

Their eyes met, when Avi noticed a tear drop slide down her cheek.\u00a0 Her embroidered scarf also slipped and she instinctively raised her other arm to re-set it.\u00a0 Her look changed to horror as she realized that she was about to expose her amputated arm.\u00a0 It had been almost a year since she lost her left hand in a freak accident, but she hadn\u2019t fully come to grips with the situation.<\/p>\n

Avi instantly reached forward and adjusted her scarf.\u00a0 He also lovingly comforted her as he draped the scarf back over her left arm.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve been meaning to tell you all day,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cI heard from Touch Bionics today \u2013 the prosthetic limb is ready!\u00a0 In two days, we are flying to Scotland for the fitting.\u201d\u00a0 More tears flowed from Aarti\u2019s mascara and liner-laden eyes and Avi gently wiped them with his fingers.\u00a0 \u201cIn sickness and in health\u2026,\u201d he whispered as he got closer to her, reminding her of their promise to each other.<\/p>\n
