The guest of honor will always be seated to the host&#8217;s right and the second most important guest to the host&#8217;s left.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Posture<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sit upright; do not slouch. \u00a0Remember not to place your elbows on the table. \u00a0Keep them by your side so that you don&#8217;t elbow\u00a0the person sitting next to you.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k0gbQntgrq8?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Remember not to make a scene out of wiping your mouth with the napkin. \u00a0Also, don&#8217;t even think about blowing your nose into the napkin. \u00a0Excuse yourself from the table and go to the restroom if you do feel like blowing your nose. \u00a0When you get up from the table temporarily, leave the napkin on your chair. \u00a0At the end of the meal, loosely fold your napkin and place it to the left of the plate in front of you. \u00a0If there is no plate at the center of the place setting, it is appropriate to lay the napkin in the center.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Before you begin eating<\/h2>\n<p>At a formal sit-down dinner, each course will be brought to you and placed to your left. \u00a0At a casual dinner, however, the food may be served by the host, or it may be passed around for the guests to help themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Before picking up the cutlery and digging into your meal, make sure everyone else has been served. \u00a0Wait for the cue from the host before you begin eating. \u00a0Traditionally, the host has the first bite after all the guests are seated and all the food is served.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fNte1ZWFa90?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>5. While eating<\/h2>\n<p>Try to make as little noise as possible while cutting up and later chewing your food. \u00a0Also, keep your mouth closed while chewing. \u00a0Although it is advised to take active part in the dinner conversation, remember not to speak with food in your mouth. \u00a0Swallow, take a sip of your drink if need be, and then proceed with what you have to say.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Place setting<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1560\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1560\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/joeri_van_veen\/370807881\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1560 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jodi365.com\/singledout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Place-setting.jpg\" alt=\"Place setting\" width=\"360\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jodi365.com\/singledout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Place-setting.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.jodi365.com\/singledout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Place-setting-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1560\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joeri van Veen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The food is usually placed to the left of your plate and the drinks to your right. \u00a0There\u2019s a trick to remembering where the forks and spoons should go. \u00a0Fork has four letters. \u00a0So does the word left. \u00a0So, it goes to your left. \u00a0Similarly, spoon and knife have five letters each, just like the word right. \u00a0So, they go on your right. \u00a0The dessert spoon and fork are usually placed at the top of your plate.<\/p>\n<p>Another question that plagues many of us is how best to remember where the utensils are placed and the specific function of each fork, spoon and glass. \u00a0 Each course has its own utensils. Every piece of silver from the entr\u00e9e fork to the dessert spoon may be placed in front of you when you are seated, or they may arrive as each course is served.<\/p>\n<p>The universal rule is to start using the cutlery from the outside and working your way inwards as the meal progresses. \u00a0If a salad is served to you first, start with the fork farthest from the left side of your plate. \u00a0The knife and fork closest to your dinner plate should be used for eating the main course.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>7. Handling food and utensils<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1563\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1563\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kjgarbutt\/5094313154\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1563 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jodi365.com\/singledout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Cutlery.jpg\" alt=\"Knife and Fork\" width=\"360\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jodi365.com\/singledout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Cutlery.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.jodi365.com\/singledout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Cutlery-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1563\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kurtis Garbutt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The continental style is usually followed both during formal and informal dinners. \u00a0This would involve holding the fork in the left hand with the tines facing down, and the knife in the right hand with your index finger resting on the blunt side of the blade. \u00a0Cut the food with the knife and spear it with the fork to bring it to your mouth. \u00a0Cut the food into bite-size pieces. \u00a0Remember not to cut it all up at one go. \u00a0Also, do not lick the knife or put it in your mouth. \u00a0If the knife isn\u2019t needed, it can remain on the table. \u00a0Remember to bring the food up to where your mouth is, instead of leaning down to your plate. \u00a0Even if you find it difficult to load food onto your fork or spoon, refrain from using your fingers to push the food onto the cutlery. \u00a0It is also impolite to use the utensils to point or gesture at somebody or something.<\/p>\n<h2>8. When the food is hot<\/h2>\n<p>No matter how hot your food is, when served, do not blow on it. \u00a0Wait for it to cool down before attempting to eat it.<\/p>\n<h2>9. While pausing<\/h2>\n<p>When you want to pause, either between mouthfuls or to be part of a conversation, place the knife over the fork making an inverted \u2018V\u2019 at the center of your plate. \u00a0The tip of the fork should face the tip of the knife.<\/p>\n<h2>14. Passing dishes<\/h2>\n<p>If the dish you want is out of your reach, politely ask for it to be passed to you. \u00a0Salt and pepper should always be passed together. \u00a0Use the serving utensils to transfer the food onto your plate. \u00a0Do not lean across the table or reach across another person\u2019s plate. \u00a0Likewise, if you hear somebody else making a request to have a dish passed to them, reach for it only if you are closest to it. \u00a0Take the dish and place it beside the person sitting next to you, and he\/she will keep passing it like that, till it reaches the person who asked for it. \u00a0Keep in mind not to load your plate along the way; request for the bowl to be passed back to you once they have served themselves.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YyM7Kk7F2yI?start=268&amp;rel=0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>15.
